After starting in Lajitas, a resort town on the Rio Grande, Big Bend 50 runners follow a mostly singletrack lollipop loop through a shrubby Chihuahuan Desert landscape against a backdrop of limestone cliffs and ragged peaks. Whatever the reason, we all dream of running in the most iconic trail races in the United States. These are some of the biggest names in trail running, making the Western States Mile one of the biggest trail races of them all.

This is the run that truly launched the sport in the United States, and its location is fittingly epic. The Sierra Nevada is as grueling as it is dazzling. Although not technically a race, the Appalachian Trail is one of these outdoor landmarks that you have to visit at least once in your lifetime.

The name says it all: This out-and-back race, held in September, takes runners across the iconic Long Bridge, with panoramic views of Lake Pend Orielle and the surrounding mountains.

This road race, held every June, provides a sightseeing tour through the picturesque city of Waconia, a hilly but scenic run along the lake, and a finish in City Square Park. These races actually start in Arkansas before traveling over the Mississippi River Bridge to finish in downtown Greenville.

Runners meet at the end and are bussed to their starting lines. The courses are flat and fast; the marathon runs along a scenic lake for the first several miles, and both races offer gorgeous views while crossing the river. Both races start and end at the same point, but the longer course travels down along the scenic Lake Taneycomo and climbs feet to the highest point on the course. The singletrack trail has some incredible sights, with sweeping vistas and soaring rock formations everywhere you look.

We love visiting wineries not only for the tastings, but also for the views. What could be better than spending the morning running past vineyards, working farms, and sprawling ranches in wine country?

This curvaceous route, which begins at Cuvaison Carneros Winery, is dynamic and challenging. After the Race: Plan on attending the post-race wine festival, included in the admission price. Supporters of the non-profit, Girls on the Run, a program that encourages young girls to train and complete a 5K race, the Maui Half Marathon not only inspires the local Hawaiian community but also America as a whole. The race kicks off at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, travels south through Lahaina toward Laniupoko Park, and then returns north back to the beach property.

After the Race: Activities abound in Maui, from surfing and stand-up paddle boarding to snorkeling and diving to some of the most stunning sunsets in the world. Colorful Colorado is a state full of residents who run and there are numerous half marathons to choose from, which take place year-round. But as hard as it is, the stunning views of the backwoods terrain of Alaska are enough to keep you wanting more and to continue trudging forward. The race ends at the Eagle River Nature Center, where you and your fellow racers can bask in the personal glory and pride that comes along with completing a killer trail run.

Runners run alongside the New River, through lush greenery that is bursting with freshness during June when the race is held. Stick around after for some post-race Bluegrass and then check out the eclectic vibe of downtown Asheville, which features more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States— which sounds like a helluva way to end a marathon, if you ask us!
